What are Fard, Masnun (Sunnah), Wajib and Nafl

Fard is a command that is supported by express injunctions in which there is no room for doubt. One refusing to accept this becomes infidel (Kafir) and the one who neglects it without any pressing reasons is a transgressor (Fasiq) and he deserves punishment. Wajib is that which is considered essential on the basis of inference. Anyone who does not believe in it being Wajib, is not an unbeliever. Nevertheless, a person who neglects it without proper reason or an excuse is a transgressor and merits punishment. Masnun (Sunnah) is an act which the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) or his companions did, or ordered to do. Nafl are acts, whose virtues are well established and confirmed by the Shariah. Performing these acts, merit reward from Allah, but failure to do these, earns no punishment. These acts are also known as Mustahab, Mandub and Tatavo’w.
